Chapter 1
So … What are YOU … CHICKEN???
Has anyone ever dared you to do something and then when you refuse called you a chicken? Have you ever done something to avoid being called a chicken? Do you really know what a chicken is and does? Don’t answer that question too fast! I am about to show you just how much like chickens you and I are!
In God’s Word he uses many things to compare our way of life to and to show us just how valuable we are to Him. He also calls us to look to some things for examples of what he wants us to be or prove His might, power, existence and love.
Job 12: 7 -10 7But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: 8Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. 9Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? 10In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
Some comparisons God uses are:
- Branches o n a vine
- Trees by a river
- A light on a hill
- Sheep
- Salt
- A runner in a race
- A wrestler
- A soldier
God also talks a lot about birds in His word. In Matthew 10: 29-31 Jesus is telling the disciples just how valuable they are to God and tells them to consider the sparrow, this is an example to us of proof of how we are also valued by God:
Matthew 10: 29-31 29Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Jesus uses the fowls of the air to show our value also:
Matthew 6:29 26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
In Matthew 23 Jesus uses the chicken as an example of disobedient children:
Matthew 23: 37 37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
God uses the eagle as an example of obedience and how we should be strengthened by Him.
Isaiah 40:31 31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Now I want to talk to you about some characteristics of chickens. Let’s see if you recognize any of these traits!
- Chickens are crowd followers.
When chickens see other chickens running or gathered, they automatically follow or go to where the majority are. They don’t know why or even where they are going.
- Chickens naturally squabble and fight.
You have heard the term “hen pecked” haven’t you? They will fight over anything! If one finds something or is perceived by the others to have food, the others automatically want it. They will chase each other around the chicken coop trying to get the “find” away from them, they are insanely jealous.
- Chickens have no interest in the heavenly places.
They walk around the chicken yard all day with their head down, scratching the dirt looking for something to eat. Most of them never even attempt to fly! They are earthbound birds and are content to stay that way. God never meant us to be like chickens in our spiritual nature!
But we are SO much like them!
- Go with the flow
- Squabble and fight easily
- No interest in soaring to the Heavenly places
Chicken living is:
Limited
Predictable
Confining
But chicken living MOST of all is BORING!
Do you ever get bored? I guess you must be CHICKEN LIVING!
The remedy is simple. God wants us to be like eagles but he wants to be the one to make us that way, to exalt us to himself.
Obadiah 3-4 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? 4Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.
Some people think a lot of themselves. They are the most spiritual people they know! Their pride raises them above others, thinking nothing can bring them down. You know the type, critical of others, they look down on people not of their own perceived caliber. They are condescending, forgetting where they came from and where they could be if not for God. They have the attitude of Peter, everyone else may deny Jesus Christ, but NEVER them.
Matthew 26: 33 33Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
Live like an eagle. What do you think of when you think of an eagle? King of the sky, soaring, majestic, master of his domain or strong?
God does not want us to live defeated petty lives like the chickens but wants us to mount up with wings like eagles.
Some Characteristics of eagles:
- Born with their mouth wide open
- Always hungry and looking for food
- Born to fly
- Tremendous Character
- Supernatural strength
- Sublime vision
Chicken living cannot lead us to a victorious Christian life. The chicken has to die in order to be used, even the egg dies. So we must die to self in order to be used of God.
